Day 3: Goodbye is an understatement

Day 3: Goodbye is an understatement

Today was our last day to pay a visit to the house full of angelic people. We had so much fun on that day, yet, we were sorrow due to the fact that we will not see them anymore. But we made our last day the most memorable and unforgettable day that they ever experienced, hence we made the most out of it, eh?

Activity 1: A, B, C is as simple as Do, Re, Mi

We started the day with practical activity, learning the Alphabet! We were stunned by their enthusiast on this activity. Each of us helps them to write and pronounce the alphabet, with examples on it. It was such a fun activity to start with. Some of them were very fast at learning new things. Although very few of them understand and able to write in the English Alphabet, we agreed that this activity engaged us even further with them. Hopefully, this activity not only they were fun to do, but useful for them in the future, and can help them to develop themselves.

Activity 2: Appreciation Card full of glitter

Next, on the list, we made the most glitter gratitude card that any person could ever imagine. They were excited when they saw all of those colorful papers, markers, and stickers spread on the table. We guided them to create their personalize gratitude card with their name on it, and a sweet little message inside. They cannot get enough with the stickers! It was the ultimate bonding session we did with them, and we glad they enjoyed it. Some of us were also unexpectedly very good at creating a gratitude card, not to mention, these people took a very good look at the detail. Amazed! These kids gratitude cards were very unique and creative. They even put some of our name on it and gave it to us. We were awed by them, we couldn’t love them any better.

Activity 3: Sandwich anyone?

On today’s menu for 'Quali-tea' time, we had an egg sandwich covered with creamy mayonnaise and fluffy bread. Here’s how we made them. We boiled some eggs, mashed them and combined them with a spoonful of mayonnaise and a touch of salt and pepper. We cut the bread from the crust (because no one likes their bread with crust, right?) and fill the bread with a generous amount of our egg-mayo filling, lastly, we cut them into triangle shapes and voila! Our egg-mayo sandwich is done. They loved our egg-sandwich, some even took 3-4 slices of bread. The happiness and smiles they showed when they eat our sandwich were beyond this world. We were as happy as they are when they loved our sandwiches. A happy tummy, a happy mind, right? Just as they thought we would stop there for today’s quali-tea time, we spoiled them with our homemade orange popsicle. It was super refreshing, a touch of sourness we got from the asam boi, was the perfect combo.

Activity 4: Let’s color the future together!

Coloring is what makes them happy. And so, we did, we made them happy, by having this coloring session with them. They had this big container box only filled with color pencils, how cool is that? Choosing a color is not a problem for them anymore, for us, maybe, but not them. Some drawing turns out to be very unique at the end. They even let us colored their drawings, which was very cute of them. We had a very blissful moment! Here are few snaps of them coloring their drawings. Oh and one more thing, we got a special visit from our lecturer, Dr. Ong in the middle of this activity. She was amazed by the kids, and of course, us hahaha.

Activity 5: Prepare your picture-ready face

Since this is our last day with them, we must take a decent photo of all of us together. Let’s gather in the center and wear your best smile. This photo will be forever in our heart together, we will remember their faces, their laughs, and their kindness. Everyone ready? 1, 2, 3 say cheese!

Activity 6: Leave the floor squeaky clean

To wrap it all out, we end the day by mopping the floor, stack up the chairs against the wall and leave the place spotless. It was getting easier for us, as we have done it several times already. We cleaned up and made sure everything is at the right place, only under than 15 minutes!

Closing 😊😊

These 3 days had been so meaningful to us and to the society. We will always remember what we see, heard and learnt from them.  These children are "Angels with Broken Wings", they are able to fly gracefully as well if they are given enough love and patience. Their existences today serve as a reminder to us who are physically and mentally fit about the value of life.

Day 2 : We don’t remember days, we remember moments

We had a whale of a time with the children on Day 2 !

Another anticipated has come! Early in the morning, all of us get ready and departed from our beloved alma mater, the University of Malaya. The children was jumping in excitement the moment they see us entering their lovely 'Home'again today. They looked more socialize and less shy when they see us today after a long interaction day with them yesterday.

Activity 1 : London Bridge is Falling Down

This is the how we attract the children’s attention by playing well known and attractive game. First of all, we guided and show them how the games work . After that, we make sure the children and us queue up in a line. Some of us play a role as London Bridge. We sing London Bridge is Falling Down together when the games begins. We witnessed that the children are tolerate to each other while playing this game, they did not push and pull each other like what we saw on yesterday. Their happy faces and real smiles while singing and playing clearly showed how happy they are. What a way to start the day!

Activity 2: 1,2,3 robot

To keep their energetic momentum , we play a catchy and tricky game which is “1,2,3 robot”. Before we started, we demonstrate the flow of the games. While playing this game, their lips shows brighter smiles even though one the rules of the games is “players cannot smile”. This is one of the cutest moments we have ever seen.

Activity 3: Scissors, rock, paper

From this old school game, we really cemented the relationship between the children and us. They feel familiar and confident to talk to us compare to yesterday. We explained them the instructions and play with them patiently.

Dancing and singing

From our observations, most of them love and enjoy in dancing and some of them are really good at it. So we taught them several trending dances such as Baby Shark, Panama and Seaweed dance. We have noticed that the kids are usually spending most of the time sitting and writing and colouring all day. We think that lead arranging them a dancing session will be good for their health. The dancing activity being conducted at a room with television to show the steps of dancing. This activity lead by group 10 members who are good at dancing. They sweat thoroughly after dancing. It shows how passionate they are when it comes to dance.
After mentally (catch up with the dance step) and physically (dancing) tired. We do a singing session presented by each department from group 10. They seemed like enjoying it.

Making Glutinous rice balls (Tang Yuan) for hi-tea

All of the process to make the colourful glutinous rice balls did by the group 10 members itself. It is nice and feel a little bit proud when the children are really enjoyed and love the 'Tang Yuan'. Even some of them asked for an extra bowl! Everyone at the center praised our members made the very tasty ' Tang Yuan'

Colouring session and accompaning the small children

We filled the children free time with colouring session because they are really love it. We coloured a few pages of cartoon drawing while chatting with them , they told us about what are they doing in their daily lives, and one of them want us to write our name into his notebook as  a memory. One of them also talked to us about his ambition to serve the dissabled children in the future. They are so kind-hearted and thoughtful. The small indian kid who is speech-dispaired keep signaling us to sit down with him and draw cartoon character with him, how cute it was.

Making Origami Butterfly

During the DIY origami making session, we taught them to make a various type of colourful origami figure such as butterfly, swans and heart. Step by step, some of them manage to make butterfly and heart figure, but one of them manage to make a swan. But is okay because the children were very happy holding the butterfly and heart origami.

Cleaning session

Despite of the heavy rain that pours the rainwater onto the floor, we were also do household chores spiritually. We swept and mopped the floor, watering plant, clear clutter and mop the table, pick up rubbish under the table and arrange the chairs back to its original place.

Social Engagement Day 1 - It's a wrap !

Day 1 :  UM  BBA Group 10 members had a well spent day with the children at IQ70+ center.

On this sunny day 8:30 morning,  all of us get ready and departed from our comfort zone be it from our residential college and also from our house. We reached the Malaysia Association for The Welfare of Mentally Challenged Center on 9 am by personal car or public transportation. All of the beautiful children was in the atmosphere of excitement the moment they see us entering the gate to the place where they are playing everyday. We sit in a circle with children and introduced ourselves.

Playing musical chairs

This is the how our engagement with the children started off. First of all, we played the songs through bluetooth connection to the amplifier. All of us run slowly to the music in a circle, we laughed, we smiled, we enjoyed , we cared of them during musical chairs. We guided them to ran in the correct direction and asked them their name along the game. They were so courageous and determined to get a seat when the music stops even thought their physical ability is a bit limited. This little action of them does really expose a great inspiration to us.

 Playing musical bottle

We passed the bottle around when the music is playing, from here we guided the children to pass the bottle to the person sit next to them and as some of them are mentally challenged. There were catching up with the game after a few round. We really saw there is a breakthrough within their intelligence.

Tom and Jerry balloons chasing

From this game, we are well-engaged with them as we blew the colourful balloons with the children for this game. During the game, we taught the children to pass the 'Tom ' balloon to the person next to them while passing the ' Jerry ' balloon with one spin around our waist to the next person sitting next to them. When the Tom and Jerry balloons meet a person at once, he or she will be executed to dance in front of us. We were shocked and surprised when the children showcase their talent in dancing and singing. We sing and dance with them so they feel less shy and loved.

 Building block using colour pencils.

We came out with this creative ideas that is build a block when we saw there is a pile of colour pencils on the table. Each of us guided a children to build a stable and neat building block. They were so happy when they are able to come out with a tall and stable block. We realized that they can make a tall block succesfully if they were given enough patience and courage.

Colouring session with the children after lunch time.

The children have a lot of colouring books accompany them everyday, they were so excited to show us their colouring and keep asking us what colour to use for this cartoon or how to colour without exceeding the line. Shortly, it is everything about - colouring.
We taught them how to mix the colours and some colouring techniques to produce a nice output. They were so happy as they quickly learn how to colour the page nicely.

Here is our members frying the vegetable fritters for hi-tea.

Some of them chopped the carrots, onions, chives and chillis. The rest helped with making the dough and mixing the chopped ingredients and fried it. The children and the person in charge of the center praised the vegetable fritters were very delicious. They enjoyed the food very much, so we planned to make something more special on the next day.

 DIY coloured salt bottle gift

During the handicraft making session, we taught them to make a beautiful DIY gift which is colourful sands in bottle. We taught them to use the coloured chalks to stir salts in the cup so turn into many kind of colours. We then helped them to hold the small glass bottle while pouring the coloured salts into the bottle. The children were very happy holding their DIY artwork.

Cleaning session

All of us help the center doing household chores during the cleaning session and also before leaving.
We swept and mopped the floor, watering plant, clear clutter and mop the table, pick up rubbish under the table and arrange the chairs back to its original place.
